This week, we ordered delicious Rock City Pizza for our offices from both of their MA locations. Rock City Pizza is a Black-owned business founded by Joseph Charles that was featured this year during the NBA Finals.
From undergrad challenges to mastering the hustle of the pizza world, Joseph’s journey to becoming a successful Black entrepreneur is an inspiration. Learn more about Joseph’s journey below, and make sure to check out Rock City Pizza at their Allston and Randolph locations.
Origin & Inspiration: Joseph was attending Bunker Hill Community College and had to pay out-of-state tuition fees because he immigrated from Haiti. In order to pay for school and make ends meet, he took a part-time job at Windy City Pizza in Dorchester; he quickly fell in love with the fast-paced environment, leading him to his pizza passion and dreams of opening his own location.
Challenges & Triumphs: Limited capital access and lack of a background in finance posed challenges. However, with the right team, he accessed capital, opened a second location, and now boasts of efficient delegation, problem-solving skills, and a rock-solid team to rely on.
❤️ Community Connection: Rock City doesn’t just serve pizzas. They’re deeply woven into the community fabric – from supporting Alston’s art district to sponsoring Brighton High’s basketball teams. Joseph’s love for sports and his commitment as a board member showcases the brand’s broader vision.
Black Business Month Reflection: Joseph’s message to Black entrepreneurs is clear: “Go and get it. Work hard, be curious, build a team.” With his experience, he emphasizes the importance of community and mentorship, citing his mentorship from a Greek pizza owner as an example of learning from diverse sources.
Future Aspirations: Get ready, pizza lovers! Rock City Pizza is eyeing 10 locations in the next five years. And if you’re visiting, Joseph recommends trying specialty subs the Aerosmith and the Pink Floyd.
Thank you, Joseph, for reminding us all of the endless possibilities and for being a beacon of perseverance, growth, and community spirit.
