Today, the state of Massachusetts announced it would extend its tax filing and payment deadline to July 15, 2020 to match the Federal filing date. This is good news for MA residents and tax professionals who gain some flexibility as everyone responds to the COVID-19 outbreak. This decision bolsters Massachusetts leaders’ stated intention to support the overall well-being of residents as they manage this evolving crisis. On March 10, Governor Charlie Baker issued an Executive Order declaring a State of Emergency in response to COVID-19.

In a press release today, Senate President Karen E. Spilka stated, “The top priority during this public health crisis is to address the immediate needs facing our residents. Our message is clear: residents should stay home and avoid social contact to be safe. Extending the tax deadline helps us accomplish that goal and provides peace of mind.”

While we are glad to see the state announce this decision, we know that individuals and businesses will still have many questions when it comes to filing their upcoming tax return.
